Tuscaloosa Metro Violent Crimes Unit (Homicide Unit) Investigate Off-Campus Crimes

Between February 20 to February 29, there have been several incidents in which UA students were victims or potential victims of crimes in the off-campus housing areas. These incidents have occurred in the early morning hours between 1:00 am to 3:00 am, where victims have been females who were walking alone. The exceptions were two robberies that occurred at businesses located off campus between the hours of 5:00 pm to 9:50 pm. The pictures below are from one of the business robberies. Investigators believe there is a possible connection with this suspect and the other incidents mentions above.

The suspect is described as follows:

Black male

Late teens to early 20’s

Approximately 5’08 to 5’10

Medium build

Wearing a dark “hoodie” sweatshirt and dark pants

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robbery- 2/13/2016–**UPDATE**

UPDATE ADVISORY

**Update**

Tuscaloosa Police Department conducting the follow-up investigation in this case have identified the following individual involved and have developed probable cause to charge the suspect with Burglary I, Probation Violation, and SORNA Violation.

Corey Rashadi Ruffins, a 23 yr. old male, was arrested on 02-18-2016 and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was held on a $75,000 bond.

February 13, 2016

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Saturday 2-13-16 at approximately 3:25 p.m., the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a delayed report of an off campus robbery in the 400 Block of Reed Street. The victim reported at approximately 2:00 a.m.  there was a knock at the door of the residence.  Upon answering the door a male subject produced a handgun, forced the victim back into the residence, and demanded money.  The suspect fled the scene with cash in an unknown direction of travel.  There were no injuries reported.

The suspect is described as follows:

Black male

Approximately 5’08 – 5’09

Average build

Short black hair

Wearing a black jacket

Early to mid-20’s

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robbery- 1/15/2016

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Friday 1-15-16 at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a report of an off campus robbery in the 100 Block of 15th Street.  The victim reported the suspect approached him with a gun and demanded money from him.  The suspect was unsuccessful and fled the area northbound on foot.  There were no injuries reported.

The suspect is described as follows:
Black Male
Approximately 5’10
Approximately 140 pounds
Wearing a black “hoodie” sweatshirt and black pants
Unknown age

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robbery 12-30-2015

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Wednesday 12-30-15 at approximately 4:30 a.m., the Tuscaloosa and University Police Departments responded to a report of an off campus robbery of a business in the 600 block of East University Blvd. An employee reported that the business was the victim of a robbery. The employee stated that she was working inside the business when a masked male entered with a gun and demanded money from the cash register. After obtaining an undetermined amount of cash the suspect left on foot toward DCH. There were no injuries reported.

The suspect is described as follows:
Black Male with a dark completion
Approximately 5’9″-6’0″
175 lbs
Wearing a black ski mask, black gloves, and all black clothing
Unknown age

University Police Investigate Robbery – 11/23/2015

November 23, 2015

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

The University Police Department is investigating a robbery that occurred in the 500 Block of Jack Warner Parkway. On 11-23-2015 at approximately 9:50 pm a witness reported that he was meeting a friend to assist him with the purchase of a cell phone. Upon arrival, the witness located the victim who had been injured by two gunshot wounds, to the leg and abdomen.  The suspects were last seen traveling eastbound on Jack Warner Parkway. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. It is believed at this time that no UA students were involved.

The suspects are described as follows:

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robbery-9/27/2015

On Sunday 09-27-15 at approximately  1:40 a.m., Tuscaloosa  Police Department responded to a report of an off campus robbery in 1100 Block of 14th Avenue. The victim reported that while walking in the area he was approached by two males who demanded money from him.  As the victim reached for his wallet, the suspects grabbed the victim’s cell phone, and then struck the victim knocking him to the ground. The suspects took cash and property before fleeing the area southbound on Convent Street.  There were minor injuries reported.

The victim described the suspects as follows:

Suspect 1:

  • Approximately 19-25 years of age
  • Black male
  • Wearing a gray shirt and black hoodie

Suspect 2:

  • Approximately  19-25  years of age
  • Black male
  • Unknown clothing description

University Police Investigate Robbery- 9/19/2015

The University Police are investigating the report of a robbery that was reported to the police on September 19, 2015 at approximately 11:30 pm in the 200 Block of McCorvey Drive.  The victim reported that at approximately 11:05 pm she was talking on her cell phone while walking with friends in the area when they were approached by two males.  One of the males used force to grab her cell phone and then fled the area heading northbound on foot.  No injuries were reported.

The victim described the suspects as follows:

Suspect 1:

  • Approximate height 5’05”
  • Black Male
  • Slender build
  • Dreadlocks
  • Wearing red shirt, camouflage pants, unknown type hat

Suspect 2:

  • Approximate 5’06-5’09
  • Black Male
  • Slender build
  • Wearing dark clothing

University Police Investigate Robbery- 9/15/2015

September 15, 2015 

UAPD Officers and Investigators conducting the follow-up investigation in this case have identified the individuals involved and have developed probable cause to charge three suspects with Robbery I.

Johnathan K. Farris, a 20 yr. old male, was arrested for Robbery I and Providing a False Name on 09-15-15 and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was held on a total $75,000 bond.

Jordan Malik Barrett, a 20 yr. old male, was arrested on 09-15-15 and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was held on a $60,000 bond.

Josiah Diamonte Nettles, a 20 yr. old male, was arrested on 09-15-15 and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was held on a $60,000 bond.

UAPD ADVISORY

September 15, 2015 

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

The University Police are investigating the report of a robbery that was reported to police on September 14, 2015 at approximately 11:57 pm in the 500 block of Devotie Dr.  The victim reported that at approximately 11:52 pm, while he was walking through the parking lot, he approached the suspect and asked for directions, at this time the suspect produced a weapon and pointed it at the victim demanding his wallet and phone. The victim gave the suspect his belongings and the suspect left the area northbound on foot. No injuries were reported.

The victim described the suspect as follows:

  • Male
  • African American
  • Approximate height between 5’08” – 5’10”
  • Approximate weight between 170 – 190 lbs.
  • Wearing a yellow visor, gray sweat pants, white t-shirt

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robberies- 9/13/2015

On 09-13-2015 at approximately 1:20 am, Tuscaloosa Police responded to a reported off campus robbery that occurred in the 600 Block of 15th Ave. The victim reported that while walking in the area he was approached by one male who pushed him to the ground and two additional males struck him while he was down.  The suspects took the victim’s cell phone and fled the scene in an unknown location. The victim had minor injuries that were treated while on scene.  The three suspects were described as follows:

Suspects:

Three black males

All three approximately 5’10”

All three weighing approximately 160 to 175 lbs

Second Incident:

On 09-13-2015 at approximately 1:41 am, Tuscaloosa Police responded to a reported off campus robbery that occurred in the 500 Block of Red Drew Ave.  The victim reported that while walking in the area a male approached him from behind and attempted to take his wallet.  As the victim pulled away the suspect appeared to have a weapon and demanded the victim’s wallet.  The victim notified an officer in the area and the suspect fled into a local venue.  Officers attempted to locate the suspect, but was unable to locate him based off the description given.  There were no reported injuries.  The suspect is described as follows :

Black male

Early 20’s

Approximately 6’00”

Approximately 150 lbs

Police Investigate Off-Campus Assaults- 9/5/2015

Between August 29th and September 3rd a series of assaults were identified in the areas between the Strip and downtown.  Five incidents were identified to have similarities.  In these incidents the victims stated that the suspects were dark skinned males in their early 20’s.  The males approached the victims and physically assaulted them.  Suspects are targeting primarily individuals traveling alone, by foot, in the early morning hours.  Suspects did not take victim’s property but did cause minor injuries to the victims.  In all of the cases the suspects have fled the scene on foot.
