Micromobility Safety

What are Micromobility Vehicles?

Micromobility vehicles are small, lightweight, personal transportation devices that typically cannot travel faster than 30 MPH.

Micromobility vehicles include non-motorized, human powered vehicles, such as bicycles, as well as motorized, electric powered vehicles, such as electric bicycles, electric scooters, electric skateboards, electric unicycles, and other small personal transportation vehicles.

Non-motorized skateboards or electric personal assistance mobility devices (EPAMDs) are not considered micromobility vehicles.

New Micromobility Policy

The University has implemented a new Micromobility Policy  to support safe, more organized use of bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, unicycles (or single-wheel devices) and other personal mobility devices on campus.

Students, faculty and staff should register their device(s) prior to arriving to campus.

Registration is required for all micromobility devices.

  • All micromobility vehicles and their batteries and chargers must be certified to applicable UL standards. Micromobility vehicles or their associated removal batteries that are not UL certified will not be registered, and may not be ridden on University property.
  • Users must register any new micromobility vehicle and their batteries and chargers they receive anytime during the year.
  • If a user replaces the batteries in their micromobility vehicle, those new batteries require an updated registration
  • All registered micromobility vehicles are allowed to use designated micromobility parking and charge locations on campus. Unregistered vehicles are prohibited from using these facilities.

Parking, Locking and Charging

  • Don’t bring micromobility devices into UA buildings, including residence halls and Greek housing.
  • Only charge batteries at dedicated charging stations outside University buildings.
  • Never use or charge the battery if it’s damaged.
  • Park at a bike rack or any designated micromobility parking area.
  • Lock personal micromobility vehicles with a U-lock.
  • Don’t park in any motor vehicle parking spaces or motorcycle parking spaces.
  • Don’t block sidewalks, walkways or entrances to buildings; keep paths clear.

Safety Tips

  • All micromobility vehicles must be ridden on the street or in a bike lane. If no bike lane is available, sidewalk use is permitted, but must be done at a cautious speed. Pedestrians have the right-of-way on sidewalks, and micromobility vehicles must yield to them. When sidewalks are crowded, walk your micromobility vehicle.
  • Stay off the Quad–micromobility vehicles are prohibited from riding on the Quad or other campus green spaces, as well as the sidewalks in and surrounding these green spaces.
  • Follow the rules of the road—stop at stop signs and red lights, yield at pedestrian crossings, obey all posted speed limits.
  • Ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Look up! Don’t ride while looking at your phone, and never Text and Ride!
  • Ride distraction-free: no earbuds, headphones, etc.
  • Signal with your left arm when turning or changing lanes (Left Turn: hand and arm extended out, parallel to the ground. Right Turn: arm extended out, bent at the elbow, hand and forearm extended upward.)
  • Wear a helmet.
  • One person per micromobility vehicle.
