CAMPUS ADVISORIES

The University of Alabama complies with the Clery Act,  by issuing Campus Advisories, also known as timely warnings, about reported crimes to the campus community in a manner that will aid in the prevention of similar crimes, as well as providing emergency notifications within UA’s Clery Act geography when the health and safety of the campus community may be at risk.

Campus Advisories are sent to the official UA email accounts of all students, faculty and staff; are posted on the UA Safety app; and below.

Campus Advisory emails provide information that is available when the email is sent. As investigations continue, details may change. Updates will be provided below as new information is gathered.

PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICES

In addition to Campus Advisories, UA may also send out Public Safety Notices for events that happen outside of UA’s Clery Act geography. While not required by the Clery Act, UA sends Public Safety Notices as part of its commitment to providing campus safety information. Public Safety Notices are sent via email and posted below. Public Safety Notices are updated as new information is gathered.

SENDING NOTIFICATIONS

The safety and security of our campus community is our highest priority and the primary factor in determining whether to issue Campus Advisories or Public Safety Notices.

The timing and decision to distribute a Campus Advisory or Public Safety Notice may be influenced by several factors, including but not limited to:

  • The promptness with which reporting officials are notified of an incident
  • Whether officers can quickly determine that there is no threat to others or the broader campus community
  • The availability and accuracy of information necessary to issue a notification
  • The level of detail provided by individuals involved in the incident
  • Whether issuing a notification could compromise an active investigation

In some cases, police or emergency responders may be addressing a situation involving a specific individual that poses no threat to others. In such instances, a campus-wide notification will not be issued.

Clery Act notifications are intended to inform the campus community about incidents that may impact safety and security. These alerts are issued when necessary to help individuals make informed decisions and take appropriate precautions.

UAPD Campus Advisory: Scooter Thefts

The University of Alabama Police Department has received multiple theft reports of electric scooters around campus in recent days. These thefts have occurred at various times and locations.  In each case, the scooter was left unattended, and no force was used.

To help prevent future incidents, UAPD recommends:

  • Record your scooter’s brand, model, and serial number somewhere safe. If it’s ever lost or stolen, this information will help you report it and recover it faster.
  • Use a high-quality U-lock or heavy-duty chain lock securing the lock through the frame and rear wheel whenever possible.
  • Consider adding an AirTag or similar GPS tracker to notify you of any movement.
  • Consider personalizing your scooter with stickers, paint or unique markings. Take photos of these unique identifiers to make it easier for law enforcement to identify if stolen.
  • Report any suspicious activity immediately to UAPD at 205-348-5454.

Anyone who has any additional information about these thefts is asked to call University Police at 205-348-5454 or Crime Stoppers at 205-752-7867 (STOP).
