Police Programs

The University of Alabama Police Department offers a variety of programs available to student organizations, classes, faculty and staff professional groups, civic groups and local K-12 schools.

Campus Safety and Awareness:

This program focuses on tips anyone can use to protect themself from becoming a crime victim. Topics include crime prevention tips, alcohol awareness, property protection, and personal safety techniques.

Run, Hide, Fight – Active Shooter Safety and Awareness:

This program focuses on properly responding if an active shooter occurs on or near campus. Topics include safely evacuating from a building, barricading to prevent contact with the shooter if evacuation is not an option, and ways of defending yourself if confronted by the shooter.

UAPD K9 Program:

This program focuses on the work of the UAPD K9 Unit. Topics include how our canines are selected and trained, and how the team is utilized on campus and around the state of Alabama. Participants will get to meet some of our K9 Officers.

Self-Defense Progam:

This program covers basic self-defense tactics. Topics include how to prevent conflict, how to escape holds and grabs, ground escapes and basic strikes.

Kinesiology 155 – Self-Defense For Women Course

In addition to the programs listed above, UAPD and the Department of Kinesiology have partnered together to present this course on self-defense for women. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will enhance their ability to defend themselves in case of physical or sexual assault as well as to enhance their overall personal safety. The course is taught by UAPD officers who are certified in Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention, or SHARP, self-defense tactics. The class is limited to 35 participants per section during the fall and spring semesters. Students can register for the 1-hour credit course through myBama during their class registration period. The course code is KIN 155.

Programs for K-12 Schools

UAPD officers are available to speak to K-12 classes on a variety of topics including policing as a profession, criminal investigations, working with canines, and police vehicles and equipment. UAPD officers are also available to read to elementary school classes.
