While UA provides adequate parking on campus, many UA faculty, staff, and students choose to park their cars at one location and walk across campus for the remainder of the day. Walking helps reduce traffic congestion.
When walking on campus, remember these rules.
- Pedestrians must obey all traffic signs, signals, lights and regulations.
- Pedestrians should always use sidewalks and crosswalks when walking across campus.
- Only cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections. Pedestrians only have the right of way when they are in a crosswalk.
- It’s against the law to cross a roadway between intersections where traffic lights are used, except at crosswalks.
- Do not cross a street at points other than crosswalks or intersections. This is known as “jaywalking.” While it often occurs but is not enforced, jaywalking is against the law.
- Do not step over barriers, such as chains between bollards, to cross a street.
- Don’t walk distracted. If reading a text or scrolling through social media, look up when getting ready to cross a street.
- Stop at all crosswalks and look both ways to ensure the crosswalk is clear before entering the street.
- Make eye contact with a driver before crossing in front of their vehicle.
- If using headphones, lower the volume or only use one earbud so you can hear what’s happening around you.
- Pedestrians should always yield to emergency vehicles.
