Traffic Safety

DRIVING ON CAMPUS

UAPD and other local law enforcement agencies enforce all state laws governing the operation of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians on the UA campus.

If you drive on campus, here are some things to remember:

  • You must obey all state laws concerning the operation of a vehicle. You could receive a citation for failing to obey a traffic law.
  • Never drive distracted.
    • Put aside electronic distractions, such as cell phones.
    • Avoid multitasking. Anything that occupies your mind or vision can be a distraction behind the wheel.
    • Avoid eating while driving.
    • Avoid grooming or applying makeup while driving.
    • Plan your route before you go. Don’t program your navigation system while driving.
  • The Alabama Hands-Free law prohibits drivers from holding and using a cell phone while operating a vehicle.
    • Do not use or reach for devices while driving.
    • Put your phone on “Do not Disturb” mode before driving. This can help remove the temptation to browse social media or respond to text messages while you are driving.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that may impair you.
    • Driving under the influence, or DUI, could result in an accident or death.
    • Getting caught driving under the influence at The University of Alabama will result in an arrest and jail time.
  • Class changes and peak travel times provide the greatest congestion on campus.
    • Always look out for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using scooters and other micromobility vehicles when driving on campus.
    • Use the Crimson Ride as an option for getting around on campus instead of driving.
