UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE THEFTS/ATTEMPTED THEFTS

University Police are investigating recent incidents of theft/attempted theft from UA students. Within the last week, two incidents involved the taking of cell phones from individuals. One location was outside Ridgecrest South/2nd Street and the other was outside the Bevill Building. In the cell phone cases, the UA student was approached by a male individual who asked to borrow their phone. After appearing to use the phone, the male individual walked/ran away. In the incident that occurred outside of the Bevill Building, the male individual ran to a waiting vehicle and rode away.

The suspect outside Ridgecrest South/2nd Street is described as a male in late teens/early twenties, light complexion, approximately 5’09” in height, approximately 140 lbs in weight, wearing a green jacket.

The suspect outside of the Bevill Building is described as a male in late teens, tall and thin, short hair, wearing a gray t-shirt with Alabama football logo, shorts, and a black hat. A suspect vehicle is a metallic or gold colored mid-sized car with possible front end damage.

Two attempted thefts also occurred within the last week. The first involved a male subject attempting to grab a purse from a female UA student as she was walking on the sidewalk in the area of Barnard Hall. The suspect is described as a male, approximately 6′ 01″ in height, approximately 170 lbs in weight, wearing a black hoodie, dark pants and black shoes. The second attempted theft involved two males in a white mid-sized SUV asking a female UA student for directions as she was walking near the Hackberry entrance to the Rose Towers lot. While talking with the student, the passenger reached out of the vehicle and attempted to take property from her. The suspects are described as males approximately 20 years of age, medium complexion, slight build, and short hair. The passenger appeared to be shorter than the driver. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

Students are reminded to use caution in letting others, including people who they don’t know, use their property and are asked to call University Police immediately if they observe suspicious activity or individuals. Calling can be expedited by programming the UAPD emergency number (205-348-5454) into cellular phones. Crime prevention information is published in UAPD’s Safer Living Guide, which is available online here.
