CAMPUS ALERTS

The Clery Act requires institutions to issue a timely warning when a Clery crime, occurring within Clery geography, poses a serious or ongoing threat to the campus community. The Department of Education emphasizes the importance of making determinations for issuing timely warnings on a case-by-case basis. The University of Alabama Police Department strives to promote a safe environment in which to live, learn and work. The men and women of the UAPD aim to provide the highest quality law enforcement services to those who comprise our UA family.

UA notifications are issues in a manner that is both timely and will aid in the prevention of future crimes. The notifications related to the Clery Act are issued in the following ways:

UA Alerts

The UA Alert System is activated in immediate emergency situations including certain criminal incidents, severe weather or an imminent threat to campus. You may receive telephone calls, emails and text (SMS) messages sent simultaneously to the campus community.

UAPD Campus Safety Advisories

If a serious or unique crime occurs on our campus and the possibility of a continuing threat to the campus remains without imminent danger, you will receive a UAPD Campus Safety Advisory via email. UAPD Campus Safety Advisories provide our campus community with a timely notification of crimes that will aid in the prevention of similar crimes and enable people to protect themselves and heighten their safety awareness.

Exceptions

Some notices may not be posted for incidents involving:

  • an arrest of the perpetrator,
  • a significant time delay in reporting
  • other circumstance diminishing a serious or continuing threat
  • The incident did not occur on the University’s Clery geography
