Law Enforcement and Tuscaloosa Fire Department Investigate Potential Arson 4-18-2017

Public Safety Notice

This information is being sent as part of UA’s commitment to providing campus safety information in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.

Earlier today UAPD and the Tuscaloosa Fire Department responded to a small fire in one room of Shelby Hall. Nobody was injured, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The cause remains under investigation, but arson is considered a possibility. Currently there is no known motive or suspect information.

Law Enforcement Responds to Multiple Off-Campus Robberies

Feb. 22, 2017

The incidents reported as robberies last night occurred in the 800 block of 12th Street, and the 1200 and 1400 blocks of 9th Ave. No injuries were reported, and nothing was actually taken from the victims.

All of the victims were students who reported a suspect approaching them near or in their cars and displaying what appeared to be a gun. The suspect(s) left after asking for money or phones. Police cannot confirm whether the incidents were related.

UAPD and TPD will continue enhanced patrols in the area. Please be aware of safety precautions. UAPD and the Tuscaloosa Police Department are investigating several armed robberies reported just south of the UA campus tonight between 10 and 11 p.m. The suspect(s) have displayed a gun and demanded property from individuals in the area.

Both UAPD and TPD have dramatically increased presence and patrols in the area. Once accurate details become available, more information will be shared.

For your safety, please be of your surroundings. When possible, don’t walk alone at night. Consider registering for Rave Guardian, an app that will immediately alert UAPD if you become concerned about safety while walking.

Police Investigate Sexual Assault 11-14-2016 – *UPDATE*

ADVISORY UPDATE

According to the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit media release, investigators have arrested the individual who reported a sexual assault that occurred early Sunday morning in the parking lot near 6th Street and Wallace Wade for filing a false police report. Investigators interviewed witnesses and recovered video surveillance of the area which did not support the initial account of the incident. After further investigation, the individual admitted to investigators she falsified her report.

University of Alabama Police Investigate On-Campus Sexual Assault

The University of Alabama Police Department is investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred on Sunday November 13 at approximately 2:00 AM in or around the parking area of Solomon’s Lot at 650 Wallace Wade Avenue. The female victim was forced into the suspect’s vehicle, a red Jeep Cherokee, where the assault occurred.

The suspects in the assault are 2 males, one being described as Hispanic, approximately 6’2 with a wiry build.

University of Alabama Police Investigate On-Campus Robbery

On Sunday October 02, 2016 at approximately 0115 a.m. The University of Alabama Police Department investigated a robbery in the parking area of Solomon’s Lot at 650 Wallace Wade Avenue. The two victims reported that they were in their vehicle when they were approached by an African American male suspect. The suspect was described as approximately 5’8-5’10 and reportedly wearing a black hoodie with silver lettering and armed with a silver weapon. He demanded the victim’s cash and other property and fled the scene.

Below are some safety considerations for students and community members:

  • Be careful and mindful of any valuables you may carry on your person
  • Be mindful of your surroundings
  • If confronted, give the criminal what they ask for. Your safety is not worth jeopardizing.

University of Alabama Police Investigate Robbery

On Saturday August 27, 2016 at approximately 0200 a.m. The University of Alabama Police Department investigated a reported robbery in the 1100 block of University Blvd. The victim reported that he was approached by 5-6 African-American males. One of the subjects took a piece of property the victim was holding and another suspect was carrying a weapon in his waistband. The victim fled the scene unharmed.

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Wednesday 4-14-16 at approximately 0238 a.m. the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a report of an off campus robbery in the 1200 Block of 10th Ave.  The victim reported that while he was walking home, a maroon vehicle with three occupants approached him and one individual exited the vehicle, struck him, and demanded his property.  The victim threw his backpack and fled the area on foot. The suspect(s) fled the area in an unknown direction and were last seen occupying a maroon car.

Tuscaloosa Metro Violent Crimes Unit (Homicide Unit) Investigate Off-Campus Crimes

Between February 20 to February 29, there have been several incidents in which UA students were victims or potential victims of crimes in the off-campus housing areas. These incidents have occurred in the early morning hours between 1:00 am to 3:00 am, where victims have been females who were walking alone. The exceptions were two robberies that occurred at businesses located off campus between the hours of 5:00 pm to 9:50 pm. The pictures below are from one of the business robberies. Investigators believe there is a possible connection with this suspect and the other incidents mentions above.

The suspect is described as follows:

Late teens to early 20’s

Approximately 5’08 to 5’10

Medium build

Wearing a dark “hoodie” sweatshirt and dark pants

Police Investigate Off-Campus Robbery- 2/13/2016–**UPDATE**

UPDATE ADVISORY

**Update**

Tuscaloosa Police Department conducting the follow-up investigation in this case have identified the following individual involved and have developed probable cause to charge the suspect with Burglary I, Probation Violation, and SORNA Violation.

Corey Rashadi Ruffins, a 23 yr. old male, was arrested on 02-18-2016 and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he was held on a $75,000 bond.

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Saturday 2-13-16 at approximately 3:25 p.m., the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a delayed report of an off campus robbery in the 400 Block of Reed Street. The victim reported at approximately 2:00 a.m.  there was a knock at the door of the residence.  Upon answering the door a male subject produced a handgun, forced the victim back into the residence, and demanded money.  The suspect fled the scene with cash in an unknown direction of travel.  There were no injuries reported.

The suspect is described as follows:

Short black hair

Wearing a black jacket

Early to mid-20’s

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Friday 1-15-16 at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to a report of an off campus robbery in the 100 Block of 15th Street.  The victim reported the suspect approached him with a gun and demanded money from him.  The suspect was unsuccessful and fled the area northbound on foot.  There were no injuries reported.

The suspect is described as follows:
Black Male
Approximately 5’10
Approximately 140 pounds
Wearing a black “hoodie” sweatshirt and black pants
Unknown age
