University Police Investigate Thefts/Attempted Thefts – 01/20/10

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE THEFTS/ATTEMPTED THEFTS

University Police are investigating recent incidents of theft/attempted theft from UA students. Within the last week, two incidents involved the taking of cell phones from individuals. One location was outside Ridgecrest South/2nd Street and the other was outside the Bevill Building. In the cell phone cases, the UA student was approached by a male individual who asked to borrow their phone. After appearing to use the phone, the male individual walked/ran away. In the incident that occurred outside of the Bevill Building, the male individual ran to a waiting vehicle and rode away.

The suspect outside Ridgecrest South/2nd Street is described as a male in late teens/early twenties, light complexion, approximately 5’09” in height, approximately 140 lbs in weight, wearing a green jacket.

The suspect outside of the Bevill Building is described as a male in late teens, tall and thin, short hair, wearing a gray t-shirt with Alabama football logo, shorts, and a black hat. A suspect vehicle is a metallic or gold colored mid-sized car with possible front end damage.

Two attempted thefts also occurred within the last week. The first involved a male subject attempting to grab a purse from a female UA student as she was walking on the sidewalk in the area of Barnard Hall. The suspect is described as a male, approximately 6′ 01″ in height, approximately 170 lbs in weight, wearing a black hoodie, dark pants and black shoes. The second attempted theft involved two males in a white mid-sized SUV asking a female UA student for directions as she was walking near the Hackberry entrance to the Rose Towers lot. While talking with the student, the passenger reached out of the vehicle and attempted to take property from her. The suspects are described as males approximately 20 years of age, medium complexion, slight build, and short hair. The passenger appeared to be shorter than the driver. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

Students are reminded to use caution in letting others, including people who they don’t know, use their property and are asked to call University Police immediately if they observe suspicious activity or individuals. TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE OFF-CAMPUS ROBBERY

On 01/07/10 at approximately 7:00 p.m., three individuals (two of whom were UA students) reported that they were the victims of a robbery in the 400 block of Grace Street.  The victims reported that they were approached by an unknown male as they were exiting their vehicle after parking.  The unknown male showed a handgun and demanded property.  The victims complied and gave the suspect property, who then fled on foot in an easterly direction.

The description provided of the suspect is as follows:

  • Male
  • Age –  late teens / early 20’s
  • Medium complexion
  • Approximately 5′ 08″ to 5’10” in height
  • Approximately 140 to 160 lbs in weight
  • Wearing a dark shirt and pants and a camouflage mask

University Police Investigate Robbery – 11/22/09 *UPDATE – 12/07/09*

— UPDATE —

UAPD’s follow-up investigation has revealed that the student was not a victim of a robbery as first reported.  The student stated that he voluntarily provided the cash to another male subject and that there was no force or threat of force used. UAPD has closed the robbery investigation.

NOVEMBER 22, 2009

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

On Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 5:00 p.m., a male University of Alabama student reported to University Police that he was the victim of a robbery that occurred between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning in Ridgecrest South, 905 2nd Street. The student reported that he approached by three unknown males in a building stairwell who demanded his wallet. The student produced his wallet and the males took cash and property from it and fled from the area on foot. The student was not injured.

The description provided of the suspects is as follows:

  • Males
  • Age 20’s
  • Dark complexion
  • All approximately 6′ 00″ to 6’01” in height

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE OFF-CAMPUS BURGLARY

On 12/04/09 at approximately 8:10 p.m. a female University of Alabama student reported to Tuscaloosa Police that she was the victim of a burglary/attempted sexual assault that occurred in the 1200 block of 7th Avenue.  The student reported that an unknown male entered her residence through an unlocked door and attempted to sexual assault her.  The unknown male fled the apartment after the unsuccessful attempt.

The suspect is described as follows:

Male
Medium to dark complexion
Approximately 5’10” to 6’00” in height
Approximately 165 to 180 pounds in weight
Wearing a white shirt and dark pants

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE OFF-CAMPUS ROBBERY

A male University of Alabama student reported to the Tuscaloosa Police Department that he was the victim of a robbery that occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2009 in the 300 block of Helen Keller Boulevard. The student reported that he was sleeping in his apartment when three unknown males, two of whom were armed with handguns, entered through an unlocked door and demanded property. The student resisted and began to struggle with the males. Two of the males assaulted the student while the other took property. All three then fled from the apartment area, two traveling in a large white four-door sedan and the other running away on foot. The student was treated for injuries at DCH Regional Medical and was released.

The description provided of the suspects is as follows:

Suspect One:

  • Male
  • Age 20’s
  • Dark complexion
  • Approximately 6′ 02″ in height and 200lbs

Suspect Two:

  • Male
  • Late teens to early 20’s
  • Dark complexion
  • Approximately 5’09” in height and 190 lbs

Suspect Three:

  • Male
  • Dark Complexion
  • Approximately 5’09” in height and 170 lbs

All suspects are described as wearing dark clothing and masks.

University Police Investigate Robbery – 10/18/09

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

Five non-UA occupants of a motor home reported to University Police that they were the victims of a robbery that occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2009 in the 900 block of Professional Plaza. One of the individuals reported that while she was outside of the motor home, she was approached by unknown male brandishing a handgun. The unknown male demanded money from her and other occupants of the motor home who heard the encounter and opened the motor home door. After taking cash from three of the individuals, the male left the area running in a southerly direction. None of the victims suffered any injuries.

The description provided of the suspects is as follows:

  • Male
  • Late 20’s
  • Dark complexion
  • Approximately 5′ 10″ – 5’11” in height, 160-170 lbs
  • Medium build
  • Thin mustache
  • Wearing a dark grey or black shirt, black pants, a mask, and black gloves

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

A male University of Alabama student reported to University Police that he was the victim of a robbery that occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Manderson Landing off of Jack Warner Parkway. The student reported he was sitting near the river when he was approached by two unknown males. One of the males struck the student and then took property from him. Both males left the area in an older model white SUV. The student did not suffer injuries that required hospital treatment.

The description provided of the suspects is as follows:

Suspect one:

  • Male
  • Dark complexion
  • Bald
  • Approximately 5′ 08″ in height, thin build
  • Wearing a black shirt

Suspect two:

  • Male
  • Dreadlocks to below ears
  • Dark complexion
  • Approximately 5′ 06″ in height
  • Wearing baggy blue jean shorts

UNIVERSITY POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY

A 40 year old male University of Alabama community member reported to University Police that he was the victim of a robbery that occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009. The victim reported that he was approached by unknown males while walking in the 300 block of Stadium Drive east of Presidential Apartments. One of the males struck the victim with a fist and property was taken. All subjects then left the area running in an easterly direction. The victim was treated for minor injuries at DCH Regional Medical Center and released. The descriptions provided of the suspects are as follows:

Suspect one:
Teenage male, dark complexion, 5’08” – 5’11” in height, approximately 150 lbs, wearing a black shirt, black shorts and sports-style tennis shoes.

Suspect two:
Teenage male, dark complexion, 5’06” – 5’09” in height, approximately 150 lbs, wearing a gray shirt and sports-style tennis shoes.

Suspect three:
Teenage male, dark complexion, 5’06” – 5’09” in height, approximately 150 lbs, wearing blue shorts and sports-style tennis shoes.

Sexual Assault Reported To Tuscaloosa PD – 02/24/09 *UPDATE – 06/12/09*

The Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit has obtained warrants for the arrest of Alexander Velazquez Hernandez in relation to this incident and a related incident that occurred on July 10, 2008 (see related advisory). The Alabama Department of Forensic Science notified Homicide Unit officials on June 10, 2009, that they had matched DNA taken from both incident scenes to a sample taken from Hernandez. At this time, Hernandez has not been located and police are asking for the public’s help in finding him. Hernandez is a hispanic male, age 24 (DOB/ 03-24-85), 5’06” tall and 156 lbs in weight.

OFF-CAMPUS SEXUAL ASSAULT REPORTED TO TUSCALOOSA POLICE

On Tuesday, February 24, 2009, a female UA student reported to Tuscaloosa Police that she was a victim of a sexual assault by an unknown male. The assault occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. in an apartment on Reed Street. The male gained entrance to the apartment by stating that he was there to address a maintenance issue; once inside, he assaulted the victim.

The description provided of the suspect is as follows:

  • Hispanic male
  • Age 20’s
  • Approximately 5’ 06″ to 5′ 08″ in height
  • Stocky build
  • Black hair – very short on sides, long on top
  • Possibly has a light mustache

ARRESTS MADE IN OFF-CAMPUS BURGLARY

Tuscaloosa Police investigators developed information leading to the arrest of four individuals in connection with the incident listed below. All four were charged with both burglary and robbery. No other suspects are being sought in connection with this incident.

TUSCALOOSA POLICE INVESTIGATE OFF-CAMPUS BURGLARY

Two individuals reported to Tuscaloosa Police that they were the victims of a burglary that occurred at approximately 12:20 A.M. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. The individuals reported that they were approached by four unknown males while sitting in front of a residence in the 1000 block of 13th Street. One of the unknown males brandished a firearm and demanded money. Some of the unknown males then accompanied the victims inside the residence and took money and property. The unknown males left running in an unknown direction. The victims did not suffer injuries.

The description provided of the suspect is as follows:

  • Males – Dark Complexion
  • Age: late teens – early twenties
  • One male was wearing a red t-shirt and black shorts
  • One male was wearing a black t-shirt and baggy blue jeans
  • One male was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jean shorts
  • One male was wearing a green t-shirt and green, yellow, and white plaid pants
